A lovely if disconcerting hour about an offbeat Australian family

Danielle Walker: Nostalgia ★★★☆☆

Danielle Walker adores her ‘strange and slightly deranged family’, a lovable bunch of misfits whose offbeat antics she lovingly recounts in Nostalgia. And you needn’t take her word for it as she presents sufficient (short) video evidence to paint a vivid picture of her Australian relations. On stage she is aided by a substantial set presumably reminiscent of her upbringing: wood panelling, TV, a modified Big Mouth Billy Bass (whose inclusion is a surprising highlight). The shelves behind her are replete with personal photos, trinkets and scrapbooks which she occasionally uses as jumping-off points for stories.

From her morbid nana (who has a singular attitude to her own cancer) to her beloved granddad (a self-sufficient outsider content with the love of his dogs and his favourite grandchild), Walker builds such a strong impression of familial bonding that it’s hard not to fall for these kooky characters. She says that previous reviews have mistaken her as a ‘character’ comedian. While the veracity of her tale is largely indisputable, there is an undeniably performative element to the show which is both winningly cute and slightly disconcerting. But there’s so much love in the room that all but the hardest of hearts will be swept along by it.

Assembly George Square Studios, until 28 August, 3.35pm.
