You may know this comic as one half of a tasty meat-themed duo (we’re talking about The Delightful Sausage, of course), but Amy Gledhill’s solo comedy work is distinguished and solid, catering to a wider, more traditional stand-up audience. As a debut hour, The Girl Before The Girl You Marry is light-hearted, assured and honest, as Gledhill convinces the room she suffers from an unfortunate curse whereby ex-partners go on to (way too quickly) marry someone else after being with her. The evidence is convincing, not to mention hilarious, as she divulges intimate stories about nip-slips, vendettas and allergies while also checking off all the prerequisite jokes about her northern accent, hometown Hull and being a ‘loser’ child.

No stranger to the comedy scene, Gledhill delivers her first show with the experience of someone with far more solo hours under her belt. Using a long list of ex-lovers (to borrow Taylor Swift’s phrase) as the show’s structure, every inevitable break-up builds in momentum. Cleverly planted party poppers and a certain hidden squeaky toy keep returning to generate more laughs and a nice bit of choreo helps bring her Rock Challenge story to cringe-inducing life.

A few less startling observations sneak their way into the set at times but are quickly elevated with hyper-specific anecdotes that give the audience a genuine insight into Gledhill's life. Crowds may start as strangers but by the end everyone is firmly onside, whooping and cheering her successes. Stand-up, it turns out, is just another string to Amy Gledhill’s bow.

Monkey Barrel Carnivore, until 28 August, 3.30pm.
