Arty’s Ani-Magination ★★★★☆
Arty’s Ani-Magination is well suited to children of an age to enjoy pantomime. Instead of King Rat, though, it’s a beloved pet rat called Gizmo who causes trouble and fun. Ten-year-old Arty is Gizmo’s owner, who is keen to present her school project on biodiversity. When she falls under a rat spell which transforms people into their favourite animal, soon everyone at school is catching the magic.
At the play’s centre is Arty’s relationship with her 15-year-old sister Sophie, who no longer plays with her because she’s too ‘cool’. Events triggered by this animal magic draw out the strong sister bond which has been recently forgotten. The play illustrates wonderful experiences to be found at school, at home, in books, and with friends, and presents the message ‘be yourself’. There’s just enough trouble from a ssssnake of a teacher and some classroom clashes to create good conflict too.
Alongside well-pitched jokes and very amusing animal impressions (especially by schoolteachers), there are some wonderful songs. Though written for children, they don’t feel juvenile and are gracefully performed. A great play that will nurture an early love of theatre, with much to recommend it over a panto.
Assembly Roxy, until 29 August, 10.30am.
