Tim Key: Mulberry ★★★★☆

Mulberry, the latest Fringe show to come from the brilliant mind of Tim Key, sees him there to greet you when you arrive. There he is, sporting a tracksuit and trainers, stalking around the set, making direct eye contact as you take your seat. It won’t be the last time either: some audience members get to hold his on-the-go beer, others give him a leg-up when needed. Behind him is a free-standing, shabby-looking front door and a battered fridge. For the next hour, we’ll peeking into his living room (and his mind) during peak lockdown.

If another comedic take on the pandemic fills you with dread or exhaustion, then fear not. Key’s poetic stream-of-consciousness, embracing everything from dating to drinking too much, is utterly invigorating. With a soft music track lending Key’s words real heft, this feels like a twisted take on a journey we’ve all been through these past two-and-a-half years. The frequent nods to his own celebrity status (at one point he laments being a question on Pointless, when nobody earmarks him as a ‘famous Tim’) is hysterical. There’s so much packed into this show: an endless fountain of genius observation and weirdness.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 28 August, 10pm.
