Yuriko Kotani: Kaiju About ★★★☆☆

Yuriko Kotani is a singular voice in British comedy. This London-based Japanese performer oscillates between profound naivety and vituperation at the drop of a hat, and it’s fascinating to watch. Whether she’s trying to get her landlord to fix her shower or explaining escalator etiquette to the audience, her punchlines often end in unexpected bursts of violence, the product of an imagination unfettered by the painstakingly innocuous way she presents herself.

Pictures: Karla Gowlett

She introduces us to her Kaiju, a Godzilla-type creature manifested with her hand using simple (and sometimes faltering) shadow puppetry. She occasionally converses with her Kaiju and some of these interactions seem to be the result of her stream-of-consciousness rather than a script, particularly later on as this interplay becomes more poignant. After a little bit of chaos enters proceedings, it all leads to a cathartic ending which is more affecting than funny as Kotani invites the crowd to encourage an act that looks simple enough but evidently carries emotional weight. A grateful Kotani pays thanks to the audience as they leave, demonstrating that this is an unusually bidirectional show.

Pleasance Dome, until 29 August, 7.10pm.
