Britney: Friends and Nothing More ★★★★☆

Coming-of-age stories about burgeoning friendships, the race to lose virginities and tribulations of high-school parties are nothing new at the Fringe, but comedy duo Britney (Charly Clive and Ellen Robertson) find something truly unique in this wonder of a show. With careful craft and exceptional dedication, they transform what could otherwise be run-of-the-mill fringe comedy into something incisive, revelatory and, most importantly, utterly hilarious.
Named after the pop sensation, Britney might be familiar to those who have tuned in to the duo’s BBC Three pilot that dealt with Clive’s diagnosis of a brain tumour. This sketch show does not examine this however, and instead the duo revel in cultural commentary, from gender reveal parties to controversies behind the door at No 10.

Beyond the script’s silliness, at the forefront of their performance is a subtle determination to undermine double standards for women working in comedy by reversing the male gaze onto the audience. Besides their sharp wit and skill as actors, Clive and Robertson are gifted with an unparalleled kinship that makes them a joy to spend an hour with. After watching this show, it’s hard to imagine how their pilot can go without being picked up for a full series.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 28 August, 5.45pm.
