Kevin Bridges: The Overdue Catch-Up ★★★★☆

The pandemic has left Kevin Bridges with a bee in his bonnet, a ring on his finger and a baby in his bathtub. All of which he’s keen to share with us. In fact, following the uproar surrounding his comment about the Queen’s death, he’s got several bees buzzing around, as well he might. A harmless dig at the government (not Her Majesty) about the fact this winter will claim many more elderly lives due to the energy crisis, led to a social-media stooshie. But, as Bridges says, if this is him being cancelled, he’s had a good run at it.
At the age of 35, with a wife and son now in his life, Bridges is in a reflective mood. He considers the lockdowns, looks ahead to his son’s schooldays, and ponders his battle with weight loss and the sleepless nights he spends disappearing inside his own mind. He’s also got a thing or two to say to anyone calling out young people as ‘snowflakes’, and the perils of sharing your joyful moments on Instagram rather than just enjoying the moment with your loved ones.

As he paces up and down the Hydro stage acknowledging his inadequacies, Bridges still looks like the master of his own dinner party (despite having 12,000 guests, many of whom spent too long at the pre-show bar). His ability to talk about his personal life but secure thousands of knowing laughs from an audience remains undiminished. From a plea for us all to keep eating bread, to his struggle to blend in with the fancy folks in his new neighbourhood, despite his riches he’s still Kevin from the Clydebank block.
OVO Hydro, Glasgow, until Sunday 25 September; the UK tour runs until Thursday 15 December.
