Hayley Tompkins: Far

A huge assemblage of multimedia works by Glasgow-based artist Hayley Tompkins takes over both floors of the Fruitmarket in Edinburgh. Titled Far, the solo exhibition gathers up her renowned manipulated found objects, a series of new specially commissioned paintings, and several digital films.
In 2013, Tompkins was one of three major artists who represented Scotland at the 55th Venice Biennale. Since then, she has presented a number of exhibitions on an international scale, but Far will be the first in a major UK gallery since 2016. It will also be the most extensive solo presentation of her work in the UK yet, stretching across a 15-year period of art-making.

On the ground floor of the Fruitmarket, we will see a suite of digital films which have never been brought together before. Projected onto suspended screens, these films are not plot driven; rather, they explore themes of everyday movement and connectivity through the means of familiar objects and sounds. Across both floors, Tompkins’ psychedelic paint palette and experimental brushwork meets a variety of everyday objects, including sunglasses, wooden chairs, and old shirts. This eclectic arrangement, which blurs the boundaries between painting and object-making, is what the artist is perhaps best known for. Finally, a sequence of unseen acrylic artworks representative of Tompkins’ unpremeditated approach to painting will be on display on the upper floor.
Hayley Tompkins: Far, Fruitmarket, Edinburgh, until Sunday 29 January.
