Love Of Print: Celebrating 50 years of Glasgow Print Studio

From its conception in 1972, Glasgow Print Studio has become a world renowned hub of contemporary printmaking. And celebrating a magnificent 50 years worth of its output is a new exhibition at Kelvingrove Art Gallery And Museum titled The Love Of Print.

Visitors can explore all five decades of the studio through early work by John Byrne, Alasdair Gray and Barbara Rae; the New Glasgow Boys, including Adrian Wiszniewski, Ken Currie, Steven Campbell, and Peter Howson; and more recent Scottish names from Turner Prize winners Martin Boyce and Chiara Phillips to the Turner Prize nominated Christine Borland. As well as digging deep into the Glasgow Print Studio archive, the Here And Now section of the exhibition comprises of 50 newly commissioned works which were offered to a range of emerging artists working within the print medium.

Reflecting on the exhibition, artist Adrian Wiszniewski says: 'A stroll through Kelvingrove Museum on a Sunday afternoon is among my fondest memories. The collection reflects the personality of Glasgow, rich in its range and depth, often idiosyncratic and always democratic. The Glasgow Print Studio shares these attributes. Like Kelvingrove, the Print Studio has embraced the very Glaswegian belief that art is for all.'

Director of Glasgow Print Studio, John Mackechnie MBE RSA, adds: 'The story of Glasgow Print Studio is really quite remarkable, starting in 1972 with a group of enthusiasts with no money in a basement flat, but a need for a facility they could use to make prints after art school. Its progress since then has been quite meteoric and at the forefront of contemporary art from Scotland ever since, inviting the best artists in Scotland to work with them and then taking the work to an international audience.'
Through the display of over 225 prints by 130 artists, The Love Of Print doesn't just embody the lasting legacy of Glasgow Print Studio, it showcases the breadth of Scotland's rich and longstanding contemporary art scene.
The Love Of Print runs until 12 March 2023 at Kelvingrove Art Gallery And Museum. Adult £7.50, concession £5, under 16s free. No booking required.
