Who won the 2022 Scottish Alternative Music Awards?

The winners of the 13th Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA) were announced on Thursday 8 December at Saint Luke's in Glasgow, covering a wide range of genres and artists representing the future of Scotland's vibrant music scene.

Presented by radio DJ Jim Gellatly and poet Leyla Josephine, the evening featured live performances by singer songwriter Becky Sikasa, electronic outfit VLURE, and rap group The Honey Farm, with rapper Bemz and DJ Phoebe Inglis-Holmes among those presenting awards.

So who took home prizes? Time to meet 2022's SAMA winners.

Best Acoustic: Linzi Clark

A singer songwriter from Paisley, Clark released her debut album All I Have Now last year. Tinged with Americana and indie-folk sensibilities, the body of work explores topics of identity, relationships and womanhood.

Best Electronic: Kintra

Dundee twins Frankie Elyse and Jozette make up this DJ/violin duo, who write and perform music inspired by Celtic sounds and otherworldly soundscapes. Kintra's debut EP Heliopause was released in 2021 and features three pulsating tracks filled with dissonant drones, infectious kick drums and catchy synth lines.

Best Hip Hop: Becca Starr

Becca Starr is a Glasgwegian rapper, singer and producer who lays her intricately written rhymes over a range of jazz, trap and soul-infused instrumentals. Her debut album Speak Of No Evil brazenly addresses themes of mental health, while previous projects have seen her advocate against domestic violence and and raise funds for Scottish Women's Aid.

Best Live Act: Hannah Laing

Another Dundee-born artist, Laing is a house DJ who landed herself a residency in Ibiza at the age of just 19. She played this year's BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, making her BBC Introducing debut, and showcased her slick ability to reimagine pop bangers as well as create floor-filling original material. To top it all off, she hosts her own podcast, Hannah’s Choice Club Night.

Best Metal: Catalysis

It seems to be the year for Dundonians, as Catalysis mark the third SAMA winner from the east-coast city. Described as a groove or thrash metal band, Catalysis are a five-piece creating waves in the Scottish Metal scene. Their latest EP Innova touches on topics of identity politics and xenophobia with a chugging haste and unapologetic intensity.

Best Newcomer: Pocket Monica

From Leith flatmates to bandmates, multi-instrumentalist Erez Yotam Bertrand and singer songwriter Iona Zawinski make up the two halves of Pocket Monica, a genre-bending duo pairing middle eastern instrumentals with heavy synths and punchy beats.

Best Rock/Alternative: Gallus

This Glasgow five-piece straddle the line between pop punk and indie rock in their catchy and riotous tunes. The past year has been a busy one for these lads as they gigged across seven countries and two continents, with even larger scale tours planned for next year. They'll play their biggest ever headline show to date at SWG3 in March.
