Monét X Change: Life Be Lifein’ cabaret review – Slaying audiences with flair
The Ru Paul winner entertains audiences with a tale of growing up, and shines with her bassy baritone voice
Monét X Change is the only contestant in Ru Paul’s Drag Race history to win both All Stars and Miss Congeniality. It’s certainly no surprise that she was awarded the latter, as her charisma comes across in abundance across this storytelling hour.

In a dress cut to her nethers, a bum-length blonde mane and posture in heels to die for, she teases the beginning of a song that showcases her bass-baritone, opera-trained voice. But first she must tell her story. Her first crush on a wannabe gang member in middle school, the development of her voice at college at least in part learnt via the medium of excessive bouts of karaoke. Then she moves on to her first serious relationship and the bit we already know, Drag Race.
Does she get around to singing that song given to her by her teacher at college? It doesn’t really give it away that, yes, she does. And what range that voice has. The bass-baritone is a beguiling audio visual feast – the deep voice from such a feminine figure creates a wonderful blending of gender. And there might even be a bit of a karaoke number in there, too.
Monét X Change: Life Be Lifein’, Underbelly Bristo Square, until 15 August, 9.15pm.
