Barry Potter And The Magic Of Wizardry cabaret review: Excellent fun for muggles
Potter conjures an hour of loveably naff jokes and playful magic in this loveable parody

Tim Motley hosts a charming magic show heavily influenced by, well, you can probably guess. Barry Potter And The Magic of Wizardry is jam-packed with conjuring tricks performed together with countless jokes and puns about the famous boy wizard and his cohorts. It’s a family show with broad appeal to young and old, the latter in particular catered for by some seriously impressive psychological routines.

The audience is frequently invited to join in, and Motley strikes a nice balance with his temporary assistants; gently teasing the adults and cajoling his more junior apprentices, while gamely implying that they too are in control of magical powers. There’s an endearing simplicity to the staging and most of his gags are firmly ‘dad joke’ fare, but it’s a well-constructed hour of playful magic featuring some impressive tricks, all neatly wrapped up with a startling finale.
