Simon Brodkin: Xavier comedy review – Packed hour from seasoned comic

Simon Brodkin’s latest is a whistlestop tour of the last couple of years. Arguably better known for his Lee Nelson character or when he’s pulling pranks on public figures such as that time he handed Theresa May her P45 (only a few months early as it turned out), it still seems strange to see him perform as himself. For this new show, he pursues a recurring theme of how his wife is a far better person than him.

This is a slick and unwavering hour of stand-up, one that a packed-out Pleasance Forth laps up. Occasionally you can foresee a punchline but the gags come thick and fast with no filler. Matt Hancock gets a thorough and well-deserved skewering while Brodkin finds disparaging words to be said about Phillip Schofield, his own daughter, and even Ant & Dec. A banker of a show.

Simon Brodkin: Xavier, Pleasance Courtyard, until 27 August, 8.30pm.
