Jeromaia Detto: Mush comedy review – Constant hilarity from Oz clown

Laughing non-stop for 55 minutes can be quite the workout. But watching this Australian clown’s hilariously stupid and hysteria-inducing sketches is worth the sore abs. From a Pringles-praising priest to an Italian beach boy, Jeromaia Detto’s cartoonish characters make for a near hour-long laughing fit. Conducting his audience through a mime-concerto consisting of imaginary instruments, this clown creates a collaborative experience that will have you clutching the strangers beside you while you dissolve into giggles together.

Detto delivers a comedy with the flair of a professional while performing the most ridiculous sketches imaginable, including a squeaky-voiced pilot and a questionable impression of a coffee machine (chosen by an audience member). His endless crowd participation carries the show, giving it a feeling of togetherness as we’re left exchanging delightedly baffled looks with each other. None of us have a clue what unhinged turn this is about to take, but we all remain committed to going along with the ride.

You may have seen a tall, long-haired Australian parading around Bristo Square. Arms stacked with flyers and yelling ‘MUSH’ at passersby, it’s still easy to lose him in the waves of promoters and incessant pamphlet hand-outs here. But this show is undoubtedly hilarious from start to finish.

Jeromaia Detto: Mush, Underbelly Cowgate, until 27 August, 5.10pm.
