Suhani Shah: Spellbound cabaret review – Thrilling ride into mentalism
Even sceptics will come away dumbfounded at the feats achieved by this veteran magic act

When Suhani Shah tells us she’s been performing for 26 years, initially you think there’s something wrong with your eyesight. How could the youthful-looking woman on stage have been treading the boards for so long? Then we discover Shah’s first foray into magic took place in her kitchen when she was just six years old. So impressed were her parents, they immediately put her in front of a crowd.

All of which explains why Shah is so at ease, chatting to the audience as if we’re a group of friends. And hats off to her for that, because although everyone here has bought a ticket to see a ‘mentalist’ in action, it’s safe to say most people are sceptical on arrival. And possibly even after they leave. But while we’re in that room, Shah blows our minds.
The big question we’re all asking ourselves is . . . how? How can she possibly know the childhood memory of a random person selected by another audience member? Or that the guy next to me was thinking of New York? And how can the serial number from a £20 in somebody’s pocket correspond with a sum we all create on our phone calculators? None of it makes sense. Yet there’s something quite comforting about that. We’re in Shah’s hands and happy to go along for the ride. And although, chances are, you’ve seen these kinds of tricks before, sceptic or not, it’s still wildly impressive and great fun.
Suhani Shah: Spellbound, Underbelly Bristo Square, until 27 August, 5.25pm.
