Emmanuel Sonubi: Curriculum Vitae comedy review – Humble set from clubby comic

This bulky bouncer-turned-comic is back after he reigned supreme over the Fringe comedy scene last year. He’s back with a show that’s essentially a live-action CV. Delving into his work history, Curriculum Vitae is a display of the Londoner’s sparkling skillset, gigantic gym-bro body and, of course, his overwhelming modesty. He admits if he were to receive an award for Most Humble Comedian that he would refuse to take it. From club bouncer to musical-theatre nerd to corporate IT guy, Sonubi takes us with him as he dawdles through the journey of his past jobs.

Picture: Jiksaw

He starts his set by telling us to ‘sit back, relax and laugh’ which isn’t the most necessary introduction to a comedy show. He also doesn’t mention that he worked as a bouncer until after a few jokes about kicking troublemakers out of the club (but maybe we’re supposed to know that already). This makes his set appear slightly clunky structurally, but his audience doesn’t seem to mind much. In fact, he has a group of IT department workers laughing so hard at his computer-tailored gags that he himself dissolves into giggles.

Although a full-run sell-out, Sonubi’s show would benefit from a few tweaks to its shape. That’s not to say that this rising comedian is incapable of delivering some great gags. His demeaner remains warm and easy-going throughout, keeping his audience trundling happily along in this lengthy résumé recap.

Emmanuel Sonubi: Curriculum Vitae, Underbelly Bristo Square, until 28 August, 6.10pm.
