Luke Osey: Immature Magic cabaret review – More about the why than the how

Luke Osey adopts the persona of a class clown who spends his school lunch break snorting condoms and peppercorns up his nose (both of which are genuine tricks here). We, the classmates in his cafeteria audience, are left laughing (and grimacing) at the sheer idiocy of it all.

Osey has built a reputation for himself in the magic industry, boasting writing credits for top turns such as Dynamo. However, his new performance seems to demonstrate more of an open-mic stand-up vibe than a magic show. Some of his ‘tricks’ (deliberately catching his tongue in a mouse trap, for example) don’t seem to illustrate a skill for illusions or sleight-of-hand. We’re not left wondering how on earth he did it, but more puzzled as to why.

The performance’s climax involves an intense game of stapler-gun Russian roulette, in which the young magician uses parts of his body as targets (a good time to remind us of Voodoo Rooms’ full nudity licence). Despite a large portion of Osey’s show involving little genuine magic, he does pull out a few stops by the end. He clearly has a knack for performance, and with more actual tricks and fewer meaningless stunts, this could have been a bigger hit.

Luke Osey: Immature Magic, PBH’s Free Fringe @ Voodoo Rooms, until 27 August, 2pm.
