Laura Ramoso: Frances comedy review – Social media star dominates her stage

Laura Ramoso’s social media success lies in her ability to deliver a sketch in a matter of seconds, absorbing viewers before they scroll on in pursuit of their next dopamine boost. When it comes to an hour-long Fringe show, the challenge is translating this fast-paced momentum into a set which lives up to such towering expectations. With an amalgamated following of 1.6m followers across Instagram and TikTok, Ramoso found fame during the pandemic as she learnt to translate her on-stage performances into 60-second hits. Embodying an exhilarating level of energy, she meets the demands of a feverishly engaged audience.

Ramoso puts forward her most popular characters including the austere German Mom and impulsive Italian Dad; however the overarching narrative centres on ex-lovers Frances and Frank who prepare themselves to reunite after an ill-timed break-up. Seamlessly switching between perspectives, Ramoso casts two front-row members as Frances’ and Frank’s respective best friends who, in the heat of the moment, must offer up conversation and advice. Ramoso clearly thrives on this daily improvisation as she visibly holds back her laughter in response to audience participation which ranges from lacklustre to gold.

Despite the post break-up sketch having the most airtime, those shorter character portrayals are her strongest material. In particular, her song about a 6ft1 woman who dreams of ‘taking a short girl’s life’ has the audience in hysterics; Ramoso’s quick outfit changes reaches a comical climax here. We also witness her furthering her material into the realms of absurdism, prompting us to feel excited about the future of her stand-up.

Laura Ramoso: Frances, Pleasance Dome, until 28 August, 8.20pm; Soho Theatre, London, 19–23 September, 9.15pm, 25–30 September, 7.15pm.
