Katy Berry: Diamond Goddess Crystal Pussy comedy review – Knockabout musical improv romp

Katy Berry puts on quite the spectacle. She appears on stage in a dazzling frock with long sea-green locks, bubbles blow about our ears, and with a phenomenal singing voice, you know you’re in for a fun show. In her musical endeavours she’s ably accompanied by pianist Adrien Pellerin and most of the song sections here are used to showcase her improv skills. The one slight problem is that some of the vocals were lost (on one side of the room at least), the musical backing overshadowing them a touch.

Her tale begins in 1986 when Berry’s mum is minding her own business on the sea front, but somehow gets herself shagged by Poseidon, no less, and finds herself pregnant. This, of course, makes Berry technically a goddess and thus very qualified to help us all find our own inner goddesses. Divided into three sections that roughly equate to anxieties, manifesting dreams, and a lesson in not getting distracted, the show enables Berry to tell stories from her own life: from a bawdy misguided move at a sleepover in her native Long Island aged 12 to letting a Morrissey-a-like momentarily get in the way of her ambitions. Thankfully that distraction was short-lived so that we were able to enjoy this silly, knockabout romp.

Katy Berry: Diamond Goddess Crystal Pussy, Just The Tonic At The Mash House, until 27 August, 2.10pm.
