Lara A King: Midlife At The Oasis comedy review – Stand-up and singalongs

Lara A King’s ease in her own skin is palpable throughout her show. King is a woman who has clocked up 55 years on this planet and despite the dodgy knee and hot flushes she’s content with her lot. She welcomes the ‘downhill’ section of her life by metaphorically running at it with arms flailing in glee.

The last few years have seen a rise in talk of the menopause, something that is long overdue considering half the population go through it. King devotes a good chunk of her show to it and quite right too, it’s relatable for those who have directly experienced it, forewarning for those who will, and essential for the fellas in the room who exist alongside womenfolk in their lives. It’s also a thoroughly entertaining and very funny take.

King punctuates her hour with country-inspired songs featuring pleasing KD Lang-like vocals. Encouraging singalongs, the most enjoyable of which are the list of foods she had to cut out to lose weight, and her cheeky signing-off paean to her lesbianism eliciting giggles from those in the room whether you identify as gay, hetero or something in between. A joyous celebration of womanhood in midlife prime.

Lara A King: Midlife At The Oasis, The Stand 4, until 27 August, 9.25pm.
