Originality be damned as mimicry of famous people ramps up but leaves little impression

‘60 impressions in 60 minutes’ is the tagline of Luke Kempner’s solo send-up of the cop shows that dominate our television screens, and he certainly fulfils that brief. To pull off such a fast-paced and slick hour is no mean feat, and Kempner certainly has to be commended for this. Nevertheless, Gritty Police Drama falls very flat at points, with a fairly predictable roster of impressions as Trump, Johnson and King Charles all had their moments, as well as David Attenborough and Ian McKellen.

Some of his mimics are better than others, with an unfortunate number closer to caricatures than impressions. His Louis Theroux is impressive, but doesn’t go beyond one gag, despite being prominent throughout. However, the audience didn’t seem to mind this old ground being retrodden with some punters declaring on exit that this was their Fringe highlight.

With the ascendancy of short online skits, impressions are experiencing a bit of a renaissance but it’s a difficult sub-genre to fill a whole Fringe hour with. This is perhaps why Kempner throws in a musical element and while he is an excellent singer, the songs feel like unnecessary padding. For fans of police procedurals or people who just want to see familiar figures being lampooned, this is an enjoyable hour, and Kempner is a talented performer. Just don’t expect originality.

Luke Kempner In Gritty Police Drama: A One-Man Musical, Pleasance Courtyard, until 28 August, 5.30pm.
