The film is the frontrunner for Charlotte Wells' script and direction, alongside acting nods for Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio

Aftersun leads the pack as Scottish BAFTA 2023 nominations unveiled

The BAFTA Scotland nominations for 2023 have been unveiled, with Charlotte Wells’ debut feature Aftersun leading the pack with five nominations. 

Other works that picked up multiple nominations include the TV drama Mayflies with three nominations, police procedural Karen Pirie with three nominations, the scripted documentary My Old School with two nominations, and the documentary Three Mothers, Two Babies And A Scandal with two nominations. 

Conor McCarron is nominated for the first time for his role in the gritty drama Dog Days

Nine participants are also receiving nominations for the first time, including Chinaza Uche, Paul Mescal, Lucy Halliday, Sally Hawkins, Lewis Gribben, Conor McCarron, Lauren Lyle, Vinette Robinson and Frankie Corio, who is the youngest BAFTA Scotland nominee ever.

Jude MacLaverty, Director of BAFTA Scotland said, ‘It’s a great source of pride to be able to bring our creative community together and celebrate another exceptional year in film and television. Our nominations this year reflect the incredible standard of work and creativity that is possible with support for, and investment in, the Scottish screen industries, and the individuals who are committed to telling stories that can reach and resonate globally.’

Izuka Hoyle is nominated for her work in the Channel 4 sitcom Big Boys

The BAFTA Scotland Audience Award for Favourite Scot On Screen (in partnership with Screen Scotland), the only BAFTA Scotland Award voted on by the public, will also returns in 2023. Nominees for the Audience Award will be announced at 9,30am on Monday 16 October, with the public vote opening for two weeks.

Winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Sunday 19 November at DoubleTree by Hilton, Glasgow Central, and will be available to watch in full on BAFTA Scotland’s YouTube channel
