Dr Ahmed Gets Hitched: My Big Fat Gay Greek Pakistani Wedding cabaret review – An appealing proposal
From online dating to finding true love, the trials and tribulations of modern romance are given a gentle examination from one all-singing, all-dancing doctor

You’ve got to show me love, croons Dr Ahmed as he shimmies across the Arts Theatre stage, and it’s clear his audience is here to do just that. He has them in the palm of his hand from the get-go in this comedy/cabaret about an interfaith, cross-culture same sex marriage. As you might expect, there’s plenty for the good doc to talk about, from the trials and tribulations of online dating, to the Mumbai matchmaking service he is driven to phone; the pickings are rich for his gentle observational humour. This conversational style only makes the inevitable homophobia and racism he’s faced along the way more horrifying. Dr Ahmed never asks for our pity though, he simply tells it as it is.
Everything changes when he meets his now-husband (‘Let’s call him Maximus, because that is his name.’). Despite (and definitely not because of) his wedding Pinterest board, Dr A soon finds himself planning a wedding. What could possibly go wrong? This lovely show feels completely authentic, with plenty of laughs and a few tear-jerking moments. It does run a little long though, and some of the detail could easily be pared back to reveal more of the emotional truth. Thankfully though, this is one Greek epic with a happy ending (and a prize for the best-dressed audience member) with plenty to savour.
Dr Ahmed Gets Hitched: My Big Fat Gay Greek Pakistani Wedding, Arts Theatre, until 2 March , 6pm.
