Jazz collective corto.alto to release new album over 30 days

Contemporary jazz ensemble corto.alto have announced an ambitious new album, with tracks to be released sequentially over 30 days. Headed up by Glasgow-based composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall, the collective will start their month-long album release from Wednesday 22 May, with singles released daily ‘across all platforms’. The resultant album, 30/108, will be the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed debut, Bad With Names.

As well as Shortall, formerly a trombonist at the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, the seven-piece band comprises some of the most exciting young talent in jazz, including drummer Graham Costello, tenor saxophonist Mateusz Sobieski and Scottish Album of the Year Award winner Fergus McCreadie on piano. During their breakout spell last year, they played Glastonbury, Love Supreme and Barcelona’s Jamboree jazz club.

Announcing the new project on Instagram, Shortall explained, ‘Over the last year or so, I wrote 108 new tune ideas and realised that if I didn’t finish them, they’d just end up staying on my hard drive. So, I chose my favourite 30 and have spent the last four months recording, producing, mixing and mastering these 30 tracks with some amazing musicians.

30/108 feels like a totally new way of exploring who I am as a musician and producer. Working on this music with some of my favourite people in the world has been truly exhausting, yet incredibly rewarding at the same time. I’m so proud to be finally sharing it with you all starting this Wednesday.'

30/108 is released from Wednesday 22 May–Thursday 20 June on on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and other platforms.
