NT Art Month Q&A: Harvey & Woodd

Tell us why NT Art Month is a good thing? Having a focus that draws non-traditional gallery visitors.

Can you sum up the ethos of your gallery? The gallery is an eclectic fusion of traditional 19th century and 20th century Scottish paintings that integrates traditional contemporary work into a Royal Academy-style hang. We are mindful of having work available for a wide variety of tastes and budgets.

Is there a piece (or two) in your gallery which particularly reflects this ethos? The way we hang our gallery is more a reflection of our ethos in that our USP is to cater for a wide taste and price point. This is illustrated by our NTAM exhibition which showcases a contemporary sculptor David Cemmick who has created a series titled ‘Out Of The Box’, all made from recycled cardboard. This whimsical journey into animalia will sit alongside a painting by Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow titled ‘Friends Or Foes’, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1890 and is illustrative of the gallery’s focus on 19th century paintings.

Can you name another gallery in NT Art Month that you especially admire? It is almost impossible to single one out, but the longevity of our neighbours at The Fine Art Society are in my opinion a ‘must-see’ as a highlight of Dundas Street, with warm and welcoming staff and a fantastic inventory of pictures.

What do you think makes the art scene in the New Town special? The ability to put on art events like NT Art Month, which highlights the New Town as the ‘arts quarter’ of Edinburgh.

Harvey & Woodd, Dundas Street, Edinburgh; NT Art Month runs until Sunday 30 June.
