NT Art Month Q&A: Pauliina Marjanen

Tell us why NT Art Month is a good thing? To me, NT Art Month is a great example of an art event that feels open and easy to approach. Art events can sometimes seem a little too ‘highbrow’ for regular people which is a shame because art really is meant for everyone and should be accessible to everyone. NT Art Month shines a light on a beautiful community within Edinburgh, whilst removing some of the mental and emotional barriers to consuming art. It brings us all closer to each other: the consumer, the artists and the galleries, and helps more people discover the fantastic art scene in the New Town.

What Remains by Pauliina Marjanen

Can you sum up the ethos of your gallery? I’m exhibiting as a pop-up at the beautiful Good Brothers Wine Cellars, which is a wine bar full of character, heaps of natural light and a wonderful atmosphere. As an artist, I want to make people feel uplifted, relaxed, safe and connected. These are the principles of hospitality, and the reason why I love to show my art in this particular environment.

Is there a piece (or two) in the gallery which particularly reflects this ethos? We’ve worked with Good Brothers Wine Cellars to put together a collection that reflects the ethos of ‘Good Wines Good Times’. Some of the wines depicted in the art are also available to purchase by glass whilst viewing the exhibition and I’m particularly thrilled about this kind of ‘immersive’ experience.

Can you name another gallery in NT Art Month that you especially admire? I’d say The Scottish Gallery; their curation of exhibitions is fantastic, but what I really admire is their great communication and the way they bring the artist close to the consumer.

What do you think makes the art scene in the New Town special? There’s a historical elegance to the New Town which is contrasted by all this contemporary creativity in the form of amazing galleries and exhibitions. It’s an exceptionally inspiring place to spend a day hopping between galleries, enjoying art and Scottish hospitality. It’s this blend of tradition and innovation, coupled with a warm sense of community and discovery that makes the New Town art scene so special.

Good Brothers Wine Cellars, Northumberland Street, Edinburgh; NT Art Month runs until Sunday 30 June.
