From Glasgow’s finest indie rockers to a troupe of rambunctious American noisemakers, here is a handful of bands we’re itching to catch at Edinburgh Psych Fest
Psych Fest is hitting Edinburgh for its second edition next month (Sunday 1 September) with a stuffed line-up of psychedelic decadence. There’s barely a bad band in the mix but these are the acts we’d call must-sees.
Cloth
Anyone who’s watched this slow-burn rock group live over the past year will have enjoyed a duo finessing their loud-quiet-loud dynamic to impressive degrees of slickness. Still feasting on the delicious meal of two great albums (Cloth and Secret Measure), there are plenty of emotionally strained bangers to be unearthed from these Glasgow-based twins.
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs
If the name doesn’t sell you on Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, their rambunctious live set and bolshy take on heavy rock probably will. Enter their gigs ready for a mosh pit and you’ll have an electrifying time.
La Luz
We were huge fans of La Luz’s latest album, News Of The Universe, when it came out earlier this year, thanks in no small part to its glimmering production and tight craft. We awarded the album four stars, writing, ‘Cleveland has called these songs “haunted psychedelia” and you can see what she means; these aren’t pastiches, but the ghosts of an American past inhabiting the present. Each is an echo through time, rebounding into 2024 with the clatter of a band reconfiguring music history for their own ecstatic vision.’ Read our full review here.
Soapbox
This young band are leaving havoc in their wake with their wiry, back-to-basics punk tunes. And this is real punk, railing against the establishment with a loud voice, three chords, and lyrics harbouring a valiant righteous streak. Expect fist-punching anthems about Prince Andrew, privatisation and more contentious topics to get the blood pumping.
The Wife Guys Of Reddit
Purveyors of one of the best band names of recent times, the Wife Guys' self-described ‘soupy rock’ sound is a lithe and limber experience. Imbuing psych rock with the serrated blade of punkiness, they teeter on the knife edge between tight construction and flailing abandon.
