Jake Baker: Rule Breaker! comedy review – Erudite and polite
A gentle and comedic persona calls for outright revolution while not forcing his own punchlines through

Jake Baker makes it clear from the top that the title Rule Breaker! is ironic. In reality, he’s about as law-abiding as it gets. He’s good-natured and switched on, if a little erratic, but you wouldn’t expect him to be advocating for a radical restructuring of our socio-political institutions during an early routine about his funny grandad. At times, Baker’s risk-averse personality is his own worst enemy. He lost confidence during his eloquently written middle section, after some intelligent jokes that slightly went over the Sunday afternoon audience’s head. He could benefit from occasionally breaking away from the ‘nice guy’ persona, in order to truly get across his salient message about the climate crisis.
The show meanders, though not necessarily in a bad way; more akin to the gentle brook that presumably flows through the North Dorset idyll where he’s from. There’s a great attention to detail in his writing, but this can get lost when he’s too polite to give his punchlines the attention they deserve. Baker is at his best when he allows himself to be a little more experimental, and there are a few nuggets of brilliance in the final section. It’s refreshing to hear a neutral, moderate type to call for revolution, and Jake Baker is an erudite, thoughtful and very funny spokesperson for the cause.
