Carousel: A Theatre Show By Ivo Graham theatre review – Devastating and beautiful

In some ways, Carousel is business as usual for Ivo Graham. The popular comedian we know and love from the worlds of stand-up, TV and podcasting, is at the microphone making us laugh. But today, he’s not just here to throw tightly worded bon mots into the audience. Standing on a tiny stage in a tiny space, he talks about the biggest things in life: love, parenthood and loss. Despite talking in the second person, so every sentence starts with ‘you’, this autobiographical tale is most definitely, unequivocally about Graham. A pinboard covered in photos, notes and tickets serves as a depository for memories, which he adds to throughout the show from items on a table deemed ‘things I can’t throw away’.

Laying himself utterly bare, Graham tells us about doomed relationships, the regret he feels for not spending more time with his late grandmother, the challenges of co-parenting, and how he dresses up as a tiger for tea with his young daughter. It’s all delivered with Graham’s trademark fast, well-crafted dialogue, only this time we’re doubled over with laughter one minute, wiping away tears the next. By the end, he looks wrung-out and so are we. A devastatingly beautiful show.

Carousel: A Theatre Show By Ivo Graham, Assembly George Square, until 25 August, 2.20pm; plus 23 & 24 August, 1pm; main picture: Matt Stronge.
