Ginger Johnson Blows Off! theatre review: Finding a new dream
Bizarre and daft but totally entertaining, the Drag Race victor paints the town bright red

Ginger Johnson, a sort of unholy drag spawn of Evel Knievel, Lucille Ball and Danny La Rue, has just reached the climax of her beautiful yet potty-mouthed torch song ‘How The Fuck Did I End Up Here?’ It’s a reasonable question for the Drag Race UK winner’s audience too, who have just witnessed a frankly bonkers hour that’s encompassed elements of panto, politics and the concept of probability (winningly taught to us via pop culture references and a tad-overlong game of Russian Roulette). Woven loosely around the theme of finding a new dream, having fulfilled her Drag Race destiny, Ginger has decided to become a daredevil.
What follows is bizarre, daft and hugely entertaining, as our host beckons us to ‘munch on this Ginger sponge’, taking potshots at JK Rowling, the far right and Tony Robinson along the way, while transforming herself into a human Coke and Mentos geyser using a tiny trampoline and a naked flame. As Ginger grapples in a frenzied clinch with her human cannonball stunt-double dummy Zsa Zsa, her clowning skills hit peak madness. Don’t try and resist: Ginger Johnson is painting this town red and it’s a blast.
Ginger Johnson Blows Off! Pleasance Courtyard, until 24 August, 6.30pm.
