Catherine Bohart: Again, With Feelings comedy review – An enjoyably unpredictable hour

What in Catherine Bohart’s life has led her to carrying a £550 taxidermy squirrel on a London bus? This, and many other questions are asked although not always answered in Again, With Feelings. Bohart has identified a new crisis age, nestled somewhere between the standard quarter-life and mid-life ones. She’s 36 and the ‘Big Three’ life choices of marriage, kids and house buying are at the forefront of her mind. Not that she feels particularly ready to think about any of them: Bohart is six years older than her girlfriend, and she doesn’t exactly feel like the more mature partner.

She readily admits her love of gossip, and spending an hour in her company feels like you’re in the company of an oversharing friend. Most of her anecdotes are fairly amusing and occasionally scandalous, but her writing can feel a bit lazy when she’s just discussing things that have happened to other people. However, the show travels along at a blistering pace, and the audience remains enraptured throughout.

At times, the show feels like a 30-minute set extended into an hour though her crowd work is a highlight, and a little more of that scattered throughout wouldn’t go amiss. For a club-style routine, there aren’t quite enough killer punchlines to elicit unbridled praise, despite it being carried along by Bohart’s compelling personality. Despite all this, if you’re looking for some classic stand-up that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Again, With Feelings will be a winner.
