Blue Badge Bunch kids review: Educational and fun

This show, which bills itself as ‘the disability Taskmaster’, has a shifting line-up of several comedians, but today compere Benny Shakes is flying the flag alone. He creates a wonderful, warm atmosphere in a cosy space, throwing gentle jibes at us as he sets out the rules of the show. Blue Badge Bunch is essentially a gameshow, designed to highlight the various ways in which people with disabilities adapt to a society geared towards so-called ‘normies’. It’s a brilliant concept, educational and fun, turning disabilities into advantages that win points. Shakes is an impeccable host, always rooting for the underdog and permanently punching up with his humour, never down. The space he creates feels genuinely safe and caring.

Tasks range from drawing with our feet to interpreting sign language phrases and trying our hand at audio description. Though there could probably be a little bit of honing done on some of the sign-language phrases (which, in a few cases feel so random as to negate guesswork) this is certain to be a show from which kids come away empowered and with a brighter understanding of the world.

Blue Badge Bunch, Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 August, 2.25pm.
