Worth The Weight

Get your spring wardrobe sorted this by swinging by one of the UK’s best loved vintage sales. Worth The Weight (Saturday 8 February) will be at Edinburgh’s The Pitt this weekend, with lots to freshen up your fashion.

Comic book fans, movie lovers and toy collectors will be in their element at Dundee Comic Con (Saturday 8 February), a free event taking place at the city’s Wellgate Shopping Centre, bringing together characters and creators for activities, panels and meet-and-greets.

Celebrating 20 years of circus magic, Big Kid Circus (Friday 7 – Sunday 16 February) will be delivering a Kingdom of Kong spectacular, featuring a towering, 30-foot ape. Catch it at Edinburgh’s Gyle Shopping Centre Car Park.

MUSIC

Cyndi Lauper

Say goodbye to a pop icon as Cyndi Lauper (Saturday 8 February) stops by Glasgow’s OVO Hydro as part of her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour. Expect an emotional rendition of the titular track, as well as classics like ‘Time After Time’, ‘True Colours’ and more.

Acclaimed electronic duo Maribou State (Saturday 8 February) are known for their remixes for the likes of Alpines and Lana Del Rey. They’re on tour promoting their recently released third album, Hallucinating Love, and have a date with Glasgow’s O2 Academy this weekend.

In Edinburgh, Fruitmarket will be shining a light on the work of female composers and performers in Illuminate Women’s Music (Saturday 8 February), which will feature newly commissioned work written for soprano Stephanie Lamprea and cellist Jessica Kerr.

STAGE

Zoe Lyons

Hosts of the popular Have A Word podcast, Adam Rowe and Dan Nightingale, are on tour with their live show Have A Word: Murderers Row (Saturday 8 February), a night of laughter featuring stand-ups who absolutely kill it on stage. King’s Theatre Glasgow is the setting.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh Playhouse will be laying on the razzle-dazzle with award-magnet musical Chicago (until Saturday 8 February). Corrie’s Faye Brookes, West End star Brenda Edwards and Strictly’s Kevin Clifton are amongst the cast.

Known for her appearances on Have I Got News For You and Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins, comic Zoe Lyons (Sunday 9 February) will be talking you through the long road which has led her to become the best version of herself in new stand-up show Werewolf. Catch her at Edinburgh’s Monkey Barrel Comedy.

September 5

Taut and illuminating, the excellent, Oscar-nominated September 5 takes a look at the ABC Sports crew who found themselves close to the action when a terrorist attack took place during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Peter Sarsgaard leads an exceptional cast.

Based on the kids’ comic series by Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey, Dog Man is a funny, chaotic and beautifully animated effort that should delight adults as much as kids. Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery and Ricky Gervais provide the voices.

An early contender for one of the films of the year, The Seed Of The Sacred Fig is the latest from courageous Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof. It follows a family torn apart by distrust and contrasting political convictions.

British Scandal: Julian Assange

Love Bombed Presents: Betrayed, the latest in the Vicky Pattison-fronted Love Bombed series, sees Vicky explore romance fraud, deception and mental manipulation. She speaks to some real-life victims with the aim of tackling the shame and stigma surrounding these crimes.

Once again delving into murky waters, British Scandal: Julian Assange takes a look at the chequered history of the WikiLeaks founder, from his heroic efforts with whistleblowers to his bizarre residence at the Ecuadorian embassy, and fall from grace.

Some of the UK’s finest acting, writing and producing talent started out in soaps, and EastEnders actress Lacey Turner will be delving into this phenomenon in We Started Here. The first two episodes focus on Lacey’s co-star Jessie Wallace and BAFTA-winning writer Sarah Phelps.

The Scottish Colourists: Radical Perspectives / Picture: Fleming Collection

In partnership with the Fleming Collection, Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studios are showcasing the work of the Scottish Colourists in the context of their European contemporaries. The Scottish Colourists: Radical Perspectives (Friday 7 February – Saturday 28 June) shows how these painters forged a new language of colour in the early 20th century.

Edinburgh’s Storytelling Centre is the setting for Sea And Wind By Tea Bendix (Saturday 8 February – Sunday 2 March), an exhibition of illustrations by the titular artist inspired by Svend-Erik Engh’s Danish Folk Tales, who will be appearing at the centre on Sunday.

In Patterns Of The Past (Saturday 8 – Friday 28 February) at Edinburgh’s Upright Gallery, British-Pakistani artist Ammna Sheikh celebrates the richness of her cultural heritage, exploring the handmade, generational techniques that have been passed down by her family.
