Hedwig And The Angry Inch theatre review: Blisteringly good

Here at The List, we have around 250 words to tell you about stuff we think you’ll like. Of those, no more than a couple should be superlatives or our editor gets mad. Thankfully, today’s their day off so we can crack open the dictionary and find all the good words to describe this new Adelaide Festival production: blistering, brilliant, bold and beautiful will do for a start, and that’s just the Bs.

Hedwig simply stuns: Seann Miley Moore was born to wear the wig and they move from camp comedy to broken beauty to rock god in the flutter of an eyelash. A truly great Hedwig demands everything from its lead: confidence, swagger, vocal prowess and a heart-breaking vulnerability. Moore has all this and more. Lightning in a bottle, they should be carried through the streets of the CBD in a nightly parade of the Queer and the broken and the beloved. Yet everyone involved in this production is clearly at the top of their game. From Adam Noviello’s heartrending Yitzhak, to the tight AF band (Victoria Falconer, Jarrad Payne, Felicity Freeman and Glenn Moorhouse rock), to Jeremy Allen’s set, to a newly spruced up Queens Theatre, this hour and a half is a night and a half and Adelaide belongs to Hedwig.

Hedwig And The Angry Inch, The Queens Theatre, until Saturday 15 March, times vary.
