Nathan May music review: Sweet stories and tunes

Nathan May, accompanied by his wonderful band, treats us to an hour of stories from his life and the lives of his family through his music, in a perfect way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon. May’s songs are brought to life by a trio of high-class musicians, including electric and slide guitars, as well as banjo and harmonica. There’s a seamless unity between the three musicians on stage that creates a delightfully lush sound (despite May admitting we’re basically sitting in on their third rehearsal).

May takes his audience on a journey through his ancestry, which is rich in Australian history and an influential source of inspiration for his music. ‘It’s Gotta Start Somewhere’ and ‘Home’ are highlights, where May celebrates the things he loves about his place (which perhaps isn’t an easy task in light of recent years). If you know May’s music, this show is one to see. If you don’t, you’re in for a treat.

Nathan May, Marree Hotel, Friday 28 March, 8pm; William Creek Hotel, Saturday 29 March, 8pm.
