AROUND TOWN

The Creative Craft Show

Much-loved crafting event The Creative Craft Show (Thursday 6 – Saturday 8 March) will be bringing creative opportunities aplenty to Glasgow’s SEC this weekend, with chances to learn new skills during workshops and demos, to purchase supplies and kits, and meet fellow enthusiasts.

Over at the Gallery Of Modern Art they’ll be celebrating International Women’s Day (Saturday 8 March) with a programme of activities and talks, including a special art club, a discussion of how the introduction of compulsory education impacted on women and girls, and more.

Celebrity chef James Martin (Sunday 9 March) will be cooking up a storm at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall this weekend in an event that’s sure to get your taste buds tingling. Expect new recipes, anecdotes, demonstrations and more.

MUSIC

Teddy Swims

He recently performed at the Brits and now international sensation Teddy Swims (Sunday 9 March) will be taking to the stage at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro as part of his I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy tour.

Founding members of Gomez Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Sunday 9 March) will be reuniting at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket this weekend to celebrate the breadth of Gomez’s output by performing at least one song from each of the band’s studio albums. They’ll be joined by special guest Buddy, an LA based singer-songwriter and long-term collaborator of the pair.

Formerly known as Wolves, VUKOVI (Sunday 9 March) are Scottish rockers Janine Shilstone and Hamish Reilly who are touring Europe promoting their latest album, My God Has Got A Gun. Check out their pop-punk sounds at Glasgow’s SWG3.

STAGE

Wild Rose / Picture: Matt Crockett

The Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh is the setting for the world premiere of new musical Wild Rose (Thursday 6 March – Saturday 19 April), based on the award-winning film of the same name and penned by original screenwriter Nicole Taylor. Featuring songs from the likes of Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood and Wynonna Judd.

You’ll know him from the likes of QI8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown and The Great Celebrity Bake Off and now you can catch dishevelled comedian David O’Doherty (Friday 7 March) when he takes to the stage at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall for a night of laughter and song in Tiny Piano Man.

Renowned actor David Hayman will be getting stuck into a theatrical classic when Arthur Miller’s Death Of A Salesman (until Sunday 9 March) comes to Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre for one week only.

SCREEN

Mickey 17

Director Bong Joon-ho is back with his long-awaited follow up to the Oscar-winning Parasite. Unfolding on a human colony, sci-fi comedy Mickey 17 follows Robert Pattinson’s titular ‘expendable’ as he endures endless danger and deaths, and tangles with Mark Ruffalo’s buffoonish politician. It’s a lot of fun.

Also out this weekend is the smaller scale, Glasgow-set On Falling. We caught this one at the Glasgow Film Festival and it’s a superbly sensitive portrait of everyday misery and exploitation from first-time filmmaker Laura Carreira, featuring a superb central performance from Joana Santos.

Starring Nope’s Keke Palmer and musical sensation SZA, One Of Them Days is a farcical and funny comedy from writer Syreeta Singleton (Insecure) following two broke friends who resort to various desperate measures to make their rent money fast.

PODCASTS

David Tennant in Rivals

The second series of the charmingly barmy Down The Caff returns to legendary cockney caff E Pellicci for more honest conversations as owners Nev and Anna chat to some of their celebrity clientele. Maverick Sabre is first up.

It’s been a long time coming but David Tennant Does a Podcast With… is back for its third season, with chats with Jameela Jamil and Ben Schwartz already available, and interviews with Russell T Davies and Stanley Tucci still to come.

In Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky the titular activist has frank conversations about reclaiming what’s been lost or taken, with a range of guests including Olivia Munn, Alan Cumming, Molly Ringwald and tech journalist Kara Swisher.

VISUAL ART

Gorge!

Hattie Quigley’s exhibition Gorge! (until Sunday 9 March) seeks to plunge the viewer into a liberated land of hedonistic chaos, exploring the relationship between femininity, food and female desire. Check it out at Edinburgh’s Summerhall.

Showing across three screens, film installation John Akomfrah – Mimesis: African Soldier (until Sunday 31 August) is the main gallery exhibition at Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art. It highlights the significant contribution of soldiers from across the Commonwealth during World War I.

And finally, over at Edinburgh’s Scottish Storytelling Centre they’ll be exhibiting Recent Work By Mike Turpie (Saturday 8 – Sunday 30 March), an Edinburgh-based, Dundee-trained painter inspired by artists like Cezanne, Gaugin and Georgia O’Keefe.
