The Routine theatre review: Mind-blowing mime
Joylyn Secunda's revelatory mime performance is a wake-up call

The Routine reminds you of the magic hidden in the everyday. Blending mime, dance and physical theatre, Joylyn Secunda quite literally holds up a mirror to society; together, we laugh, gasp and reflect in equal measure as they take us through the highs and lows of a life stuck in an endless loop. From the mundane act of brushing their teeth to the chaos of a car crash, every movement feels painfully relatable because, let’s be honest, we’re all trapped in routines of our own.
What’s truly mind-blowing is how Secunda uses their body, expressions and impeccable mime skills to embody the world around them. Air, water, the sun, joy, sorrow, they weave it all seamlessly into their performance. One second, they're a bird soaring free, the next a snake coiled in frustration. It’s hypnotic, hilarious and deeply thought-provoking. Without a single word, they somehow manage to capture the full spectrum of human emotion.
The storytelling? Spot-on. The physicality? Unbelievable. The emotions? All over the place (in the best way possible). Secunda doesn’t just put on a show, they pull you into a world where routines are poetry and the mundane is pure magic. The Routine isn’t just a performance; it’s a wake-up call wrapped in comedy. By the end, it’s a revelation, a reminder that life is a stage and we’re all just performers in this grand mime. So why not break the cycle, do what makes us happy and make our own routines worth living?
The Routine, Studio Theatre at Goodwood Theatre and Studios, until Sunday 23 March, 3.30pm.
