The Cat's Mother is a funny, moving play centring around two Irish sisters – Sinead (Sarah Madden) and Ciara (Eimear O' Riordan) – who over the course of a weekend attempt to grapple with a morally-challenging decision surrounding their mother, who's early-onset dementia is proving too difficult to handle.

The pair have great chemistry on stage, and are convincing in their portrayal of a sisterly relationship. The simple staging and regular scene changes keep the pace flowing – and the comedic moments are some of the play's most successful. Unfortunately there are times where the performance suffers from slight over acting, with the occasional lines screamed at an unnecessarily loud pitch.

The show is almost stolen by the multi-character cameos of the third actor playing a bored Pret barista, spiritual life coach, A&E nurse and over-keen friend, Kate Kennedy offers a perfectly deadpan, humourous performance for which she should be applauded.

The ending sadly felt a bit rushed, and failed to pack the emotional punch it could, and should have. There were moments when things felt overly-frantic, with too much pacing and shouting. However, overall The Cat's Mother is a great Irish comedy tackling a very real and difficult issue.
