Fifth annual Scottish Awards for New Music nominees announced

New Music Scotland has shortlisted the best Scottish talent across thirteen different categories, spanning composition, musicianship and production
New Music Scotland (NMS) has announced the nominees for this year's Scottish Awards for New Music, showcasing the very best talent across Scotland's music industry. The winners will be announced at the fifth annual awards ceremony streamed live from Glasgow on Thursday 7 July on the NMS website.
Musicians, composers, programmers and producers have been shortlisted across thirteen different categories, two of which are new to this year's awards. For the first time, there is a New Music for Media category celebrating the best new music written for TV, film or video games, and a New Music in Covid Times category shedding light on artists finding new ways to create throughout the global pandemic.
Nominated for the newly added New Music in Media award is Glasgow-based composer Francis Macdonald for his score in the documentary The Trial of Alex Salmond, Edinburgh-based sound artist Luci Holland for her work on the film Sayo and Linda Bucklet for her scoring of the film Henry Glassie Field Work. Drake Music Scotland and the Tinderbox Collective are up for the New Music in Covid Times award for their Distant Duets project that saw five musical duets facilitated online with a varied group of Scottish artists.
In returning categories, singer-songwriter Rachel Sermanni is nominated for the New Traditional Music category for her work on My Light Shines On with Aidan O'Rourke, Brìghde Chaimbeul, Bashir Saade and Graeme Stephen. Liam Shortall, the 24-year-old trombonist from Dumfries, is nominated for the Innovation in Jazz category for his cross-genre collective corto.alto, alongside saxophonist Paul Towndrow for his album Deepening the River.
Receiving a staggering four nominations in total is Scotland's street orchestra The Nevis Ensemble. One of their nominations is for the Environmental Sustainability award, for which their Lochan Sketches project – consisting of ten solo works centring around Scotland's coastal and water environments and how they enhance wellbeing – is shortlisted.
The Scottish Awards for New Music are created with support from the Open Project Fund through Creative Scotland and the National Lottery. A full list of categories and nominees can be found on the NMS website, where you can also read extensive bios on each act.
