Massive Dad's Stevie Martin has gone solo. Always a charismatic stage presence as part of that terrific sketch trio, Vol. 1 aims to deconstruct the art of a show opening through a series of sketches and set pieces. As you'd expect from a writer and performer of Martin's calibre, it's a bright and adventurous hour, and while there's a sense that the concept is somewhat abandoned along the way, this nonetheless marks a sharp introduction.

In the earliest days of any Fringe, the occasional slip up is to be expected. Tonight Martin's 'dramatic opening' is upstaged when she herself inadvertently collapses half of her set. To her credit, there's no sense that she's been thrown off course or that anything has gone wrong. Given the circumstances this is impressive.

With the chaos out the way there's a lot to enjoy in Vol. 1: the obvious highlight being a wonderful TED parody which unites the audience in appreciation of Martin's acting skills and indulges her oddball streak. There's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from an old friend that's well set up, and an 'intermission' that playfully mocks click-bait journalism and a generation obsessed with social media. A bold and eventful first show.
