With long sandy beaches and spectacular sea views, dramatic cliffs, undulating golf links and a string of coastal towns and villages, the identity of Ayrshire and Arran is intimately tied into its coastline on the Firth of Clyde. Add to this list of connections the great seafood you can find around the region, sometimes sourced from local waters, elsewhere gathered from the riches on offer from other parts of Scotland.

Find fresh fish and shellfish on sale at local fishmongers C Fayre in Largs and J Pieroni in Ayr, or head to Fencebay & Fins, an all-in-one farm shop, smokehouse and seafood restaurant just outside Fairlie. There's a contemporary take on fish and chips at the Fish Works takeaway on the prom at Largs, while MacCallums of Troon has fish and chips from its Wee Hurrie takeaway alongside their more formal Oyster Bar. Nearby, Troon marina is the setting for the stylish seafood dishes served at Scotts, while Si! Shack @ The Waterside at Seamill by West Kilbride offers a pleasantly informal maritime-themed seafood hut with great views over to Arran.

On the island, new opening Mara at Corrie is another seafood shack and takeaway looking to support sustainable local fishing. For a couple of more traditional approaches to the art of cooking and serving the catch of the day, the Ship Inn is a favourite for pub meals in Irvine, while at Maidens just north of Turnberry is the long-established Wildings, a coastal restaurant well known for its seafood specialities.
