Bianca Del Rio: 'You can be a clown and still function in the world, and not take anything too seriously'

Drag Superstar brings her razor-sharp wit to the UK as part of the Blame It On Bianca world tour
American drag superstar Bianca Del Rio (alter-ego of Roy Haylock), the irrepressible winner of the sixth series of RuPaul's Drag Race and titular star of American satire Hurricane Bianca: From Russia With Hate, is fuelled by a no-bullshit approach. She has a satirical, audacious wit and wears her outsider status proudly, calling out hypocrisy and pomposity.
Famous for dishing out tongue lashings on Drag Race, even shocking Michelle Visage at some points, she has worked with and been inspired by the late Joan Rivers, whose acid putdowns were the stuff of legend. Of her influence, she says with a laugh, 'I only like the dead people. I love Joan Rivers, I love John Brickel, those are my absolute favourites. But, nowadays, I love Chris Rock, he is genius and also Wanda Sykes, they just make me cackle with their delivery. They would be the top two on my list'.
Her latest stage show, which has sold out internationally, deals in subjects which could be considered taboo. Were there any that would be off-limits? 'Hell, no, I laugh at everything', she exclaims. 'First of all I am the biggest joke, so there is no line for me. Anyone who is coming to see a man in a dress and a wig already has a sense of humour – if everything else fails, we can always talk about Trump, because that's a barrel of laughs'.
Indeed, her message for the current President is simple: 'A little less bronzer, and he might come across a little more natural'.
As for her own fans, she offers her own special patented Bianca advice. 'Pay attention at school, so you don't end up like me', she quips. 'You can be a clown and still function in the world, and not take anything too seriously'.
Blame it on Bianca, SEC, Glasgow, Fri 20 Jul; Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Sat 21 Jul, then touring.
