Godzilla vs. Kong ★★★★☆

Although it won't yet be seen on suitably super-sized screens, Godzilla vs. Kong is a reminder of the sheer scale and artistry of Hollywood spectacle at its finest. Providing the human backdrop to a unique dust-up between two iconic titans, the superb cast (Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgård, Brian Tyree Henry) are often made to look very small, but a beautifully rendered King Kong provides the all-important pathos and director Adam Wingard (The Guest) excels at showcasing the effects and delivering exciting action set-pieces that prove that sometimes bigger is indeed better.

Minari ★★★★★

This stunning, six-time Oscar-nominated domestic tale from Lee Isaac Chung draws on his own upbringing as it tells the moving and wryly amusing story of a family of South Korean immigrants who start up a vegetable farm in 1980s Arkansas. Starring Steven Yeun (Burning, The Walking Dead) as the stubborn patriarch and Yeri Han as his frustrated wife, there's also some superb scene-stealing from the adorable Alan S Kim as their seven-year-old son and Yuh-Jung Youn as a very unconventional grandmother.

The Mauritanian ★★★★☆

Nominated for five BAFTA Film Awards, the winners of which will be announced this weekend, powerful prison drama The Mauritanian, from Scottish director Kevin Macdonald, tells the true story of Guantanamo Bay detainee Mohamedou Ould Slahi and his long fight for freedom. Jodie Foster picked up a Golden Globe for her supporting work as Slahi's attorney Nancy Hollander, while French star Tahar Rahim (A Prophet, The Serpent) puts in one of the best performances of his incredibly impressive career, as Slahi himself.

Raya and the Last Dragon ★★★★★

Those without Disney+ can now own this gorgeous, funny and uplifting Southeast Asia-inspired animation which utilises the vocal skills of Star Wars's Kelly Marie Tran and comic sensation Awkwafina. Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim and Sandra Oh are just some of the supporting players in a film that is the perfect escape from pandemic-related despair. It follows brave female warrior Raya (Tran), who is looking to return her homeland of Kumandra to a state of peace and harmony with the help of the titular magical creature (voiced brilliantly by Awkwafina) and a wonderfully ragtag crew.

The Dissident ★★★★☆

Oscar-winning documentarian Bryan Fogel (Icarus) is behind this beautifully judged, BAFTA-nominated exploration of the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which counts Khashoggi's friends, colleagues and fiancée amongst its expert sources, as well as those who investigated his murder. Illuminating the reporter's state of mind leading up to his death, his long, varied and sometimes controversial career, and the specifics of the crime and its aftermath, it's an absorbing, informative and touchingly humane piece of investigative filmmaking, and a fitting tribute to a truly courageous character.
