Jaimeo Brown's Transcendence, Jerron 'Blind Boy' Paxton and Becca Stevens are among the highlights of Dundee Jazz Festival

Small but perfectly-formed jazz festival gets a good spread of the familiar and the adventurous
The Dundee Jazz Festival announced its 2017 programme this afternoon, and it's a pocket-sized version of everything you want from a jazz festival: some cutting-edge stuff, some funk, some authentic blues, some traditional jazz, a tribute to a great star and some music that isn't really jazz at all but which nevertheless makes sense in context.
Glasgow's own Hamish Stuart, formerly of the Average White Band, kicks things off with a run through his old outfit's classic 70s albums, with the help of old friend and bandmade Molly Duncan on sax (Wed 15 Nov, Gardyne Theatre). The following night it's a double-header of blues-rock, with Monaghan singer-guitarist Grainne Duffy sharing a bill with the Gerry Jablonski Band (Thu 16 Nov, Gardyne Theatre).
US drummer Jaimeo Brown, tenor sax player Jaleel Shaw and guitarist and synth player Chris Sholar present Brown and Sholar's Transcendence project, which combines folk recordings of Alabama quilters with hip-hop beats and rock guitar to stunning effect (Thu 16 Nov, Dundee Rep Theatre).
Acoustic blues gets a showcase from Jerron 'Blind Boy' Paxton, a gifted multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles who's absorbed the sound and feel of 20s and 30s jazz (Fri 17 Nov, Dundee Rep Theatre). In the Reading Rooms, the eclectic ninei-piece funk & hip-hop ensemble Mouse Outfit feature tight musicianship and lyrical acrobatics (Fri 17 Nov.)
On Sat 18 Nov, lovers of jazz song will have to choose between Seonad Aitken's fond tribute A Night with Ella (Gardyne Theatre) and the present generation in the form of Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Becca Stevens and her band, who combine pop, jazz and folk in both their own songs and arrangements of numbers by Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder.
Sunday afternoon brings the ever-popular Jazz in the Ferry, with three hours of music across five different venues.
Dundee Jazz Festival runs at various venues in Dundee from Wed 15–Sun 19 Nov 2017. Tickets go on sale from Wed 4 Oct
