Raya and the Last Dragon ★★★★★

Disney's latest animated adventure is also one of its most stunning, taking inspiration from the culture and landscapes of Southeast Asia and ensuring things are as witty as they are exhilarating with its cast of eccentric characters. Star Wars' Kelly Marie Tran is gutsy heroine Raya, a warrior who teams up with the last remaining dragon (voiced, quite brilliantly, by Awkwafina) to bring life and hope back to the ravaged land of Kumandra. It's the perfect way to lift your lockdown blues.

My Donkey, My Lover & I ★★★★☆

Here's another real spirit-lifter. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's travails, this delightful French farce sees a woman's romantic notion of pursuing her lover on a trip to the Cévennes go less than smoothly when she has to wrangle with a stubborn donkey and awkwardly mingle with her lover's wife and child. Featuring a sparkling comedic turn from Call My Agent!'s Laure Calamy and some truly spectacular scenery, it's a fun romp about falling for an ass.

Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché ★★★★☆

Taking an idiosyncratic and strikingly sensitive look at the punk scene and one of its leading lights, this documentary from writer-director Celeste Bell aims to illuminate her mum, Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, otherwise known as Poly Styrene, the lead singer of X-Ray Spex. Working with co-director Paul Sng and co-writer Zoe Howe, Bell does a fine job of helping us to understand the singer and her unique place in the scene of the time, as a mixed-race working-class woman, whilst coming to terms with the chaotic nature of her own upbringing. Add in a wealth of notable contributors (including Kathleen Hanna, Neneh Cherry and Thurston Moore) and the result is something really quite impressive.

Lucky ★★★★☆

This smart little satirical horror from director Natasha Kermani and writer-star Brea Grant (who directed the recent 12 Hour Shift) plays with genre tropes as it shines a light on the female condition. Grant plays May, the writer of several successful business books who finds herself the target of a masked man, who returns to attack her in her home night after night. Poking fun at the patronising attitudes of police and medical professionals, while exploring such issues as self-confidence, solidarity, gaslighting and victim-blaming, there's plenty of food for thought in amongst the frights.

The Climb ★★★★☆

Following its brief run in UK cinemas last autumn, this genuinely hilarious American comedy is now available to rent and you really won't regret doing so. Written by its stars Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin (with Covino also on directing duties), who share great screen chemistry, The Climb follows a pair of best pals across a number of key episodes in their lives, taking in feuds and changes in fortune, romantic mishaps, and more.
