When the real world is in crisis, where hate and fear dominate political debate and science is undermined by the intellectually and morally corrupt, the return of a sci-fi franchise that has constantly aspired to greater things for the human race couldn't come at a better time. The impressive looking trailer for Star Trek: Discovery (weekly episodes beamed out from 25 Sep) shows the crew of USS Discovery and Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) attempting to end a war. The new series created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman is set ten years before the Enterprise takes flight, features the show's first openly gay character and stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Shazad Latif, Michelle Yeoh and Doug Jones.

Also in TV BoJack Horseman returns for season four (8 Sep), Narcos: Season 3 begins (1 Sep) and the first season of The Good Place (21 Sep), a comedy starring Ted Danson and Kristen Bell as a woman who makes it to heaven by case of mistaken identity, appears with season two airing weekly after that. The whole of Toast of London (1 Sep) will also be available. An hour-long comedy special Jerry Before Seinfeld (19 Sep) sees Seinfeld return to the club that helped launch his career for a stand-up show.

In film, Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's Gerald's Game (29 Sep) makes its premiere on Netflix as does Angelina Jolie's drama about life under the Khmer Rouge, First They Killed My Father (15 Sep). If you enjoyed Tucker and Dale vs Evil, then rejoice because director Eli Craig returns with another comedy horror. This time he takes on the possessed child trope in Little Evil (1 Sep) which stars Adam Scott and Evangeline Lilly. Strong Island (15 Sep) is an unmissable documentary directed by Yance Ford that revisits the painful topic of her brother's murder twenty-five years ago in Long Island.

Fans of boxing should check out Thomas Napper's Jawbone (8 Sep) and Ben Younger's dramatization of Vinny Pazienza's incredible comeback after a car accident in Bleed For This (1 Sep). Though not strictly a boxing film Anna Rose Holmer's The Fits (13 Sep) features a turn from junior Olympic boxer Da'Sean Minor and a revelatory performance from a young girl named Royalty Hightower who makes the transition from boxing to dance. Also in film Kill Bill: Vol. 1 &2 (1 Sep), Spectre (22 Sep), Blue is the Warmest Color (25 Sep), and Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac: Volume 1&2 (28 Sep).
