Nomadland and Rocks lead the way as BAFTA announce a striking selection of film awards nominations

The organisation's recent diversity push results in a landmark list

Having voted on the highlights of a cinematic year unlike any other, BAFTA today announced their nominations for their 2021 film awards ceremony, and their recent push for a more diverse selection of nominees – with the organisation introducing a longlist system amongst other changes – has reaped astonishing results.

With the contenders entertainingly announced by Aisling Bea and Susan Wokoma from the Royal Albert Hall, American road tripper Nomadland and British teen drama Rocks led the pack with seven nominations apiece. Remarkably, 16 of the 24 acting nominees come from ethnic minority groups (including Daniel Kaluuya, Riz Ahmed, Bukky Bakray, Alfre Woodard and Wunmi Mosaku), something that's particularly notable considering not one single actor of colour was nominated in those categories last year.

Expanding the Outstanding British Film category to ten nominations has thrillingly allowed for a wide range of homegrown cinema to be celebrated in an awards show which has, in previous years, somewhat embarrassingly foregrounded American cinema, while the acting categories and Best Director field now stretch to six nominees each.

Wonderful surprises include List favourite Radha Blank included in the Leading Actress category for the hilarious and incendiary The Forty-Year-Old Version, and the director of another of our five-star picks, the incomparably powerful Bosnian War drama Quo Vadis, Aida?, Jasmila Žbanić, is amongst the four women nominated in the director category – again, last year there were none. Six nominations for Minari and Mank, four for Another Round and Calm With Horses, and three for His House cap it off. Now, we're excited. Bring on Sun 11 Apr, when the winners will be revealed.

Here's that list in full.
