Summer is in full swing, the Fringe is nearly here, and Edinburgh is positively abuzz with an embarrassment of things to do. We know you're eager for August to get here already, so the timing couldn't be better for Heverlee at New Waverley, a pop-up micro festival fusing Belgian and Scottish culture at the new Waverley Arches that boasts an amazing lineup of music, artists, beer and moules-frites. Yeah, you heard that right, moules et frites.

The event launches Fri 21 July and runs through to Sun 23 and we reckon it's the pick of the weekend's action. So let's take a closer look at what's on offer.

Belgian beer, naturally…

The whole idea behind this event is to recreate the experience of a Belgian summer beer garden, and there's arguably no better beer culture to be found. Heverlee is a relatively new kid on the block, but the recipe for its classic pilsner was inspired from a millennia-old brew by monks at the Abbey of the Order of Premontre, Leuven. Let's face it, all the best beers were discovered by monks. Guests at the festival get to try out two limited Heverlee brews, created in Belgium especially for the event – catnip for beer aficionados and good times for the rest of us.

Music from Éclair Fifi, Linkwood and Charlie Bones

An absolute belter of a music lineup is headed up by LuckyMe's Éclair Fifi, now a long-time hero of the Scottish dance scene, London's Charlie Bones of underground radio station NTS, and Edinburgh's very own Linkwood of Firecracker Recordings. The latter has hand-picked a number of DJs to perform across the weekend, including House of Traps, David Barbarossa, Kris Wasabi and more.

The Pitt

Now back to those moule-frites … Breaking out of their Leith home are street food purveyors The Pitt, who will be serving up Belgian-inspired dishes, including Carbonade flamande (a traditional Belgian beef stew – Google it and try not to drool) made with Heverlee beer, the much vaunted moule-frites (mussels and fries) and steak fries. Rumour has it traditional Belgian waffles will be at hand if sweet, not savoury, is your bag.

KinoKlub and live street art

The Edinburgh art scene is on the rise, and one of the biggest names around is LeithLate. So expectations should be high given that one of its organisers, Fraser Gray, is inviting a number of street artists to create murals live at the festival, drawing on Belgian influences, a country with a great tradition of contemporary street art. Fresh off an appearance at Hidden Door, installation specialists KinoKlub have an immersive experience planned for one of the arches, with Belgian-themed animations and scenes from classic Belgian cinema.

Picturehouse Pop-Up Cinema

For parents wanting a piece of the action but uncertain about bringing the kids along, Sunday sees Picturehouse Pop-Up Cinema present a family friendly film from 1pm, giving you ample time to sample the beer and food (moules-frites!). Later in the evening the decidedly less family friendly, but bloody hilarious, In Bruges will screen at 9pm, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
