Record Store Day takes place on Sat 22 Apr, a day of special releases and events to highlight and celebrate the UK's independent record shops. We've had a look at what you can expect from RSD in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Manchester and Bristol.

Glasgow

Community record shops don't come much more definitive than Glasgow's mighty Monorail, and fortunately it comes with its own adjacent gig venue at Mono. Playing live will be Snails, Pussy Mothers, Teen Canteen and Breakfast Muff, with DJ sets from GK Machine, Gavin Dunbar of Camera Obscura, and others. At LOVEMusic, meanwhile, there's a neverending live line-up, including Colonel Mustard & the Dijon 5, Pronto Mama, Reaction, Ultras, Static Union and more.

At LP Records the line-up is still being finalised, but Happyness is one confirmed live guest and Gold Flake Paint will be selecting some of the DJs. Elsewhere, Mixed Up Records and Paisley's Feel the Groove will be joining in without any advertised live guests, although The View are signing at the latter at 4.30pm, as part of their whirlwind signing RSD tour of Scotland (they're also at Assai in Dundee at 10.30am, Assai in Edinburgh at 1pm, and Feel the Groove Pop Up Shop in King Tut's at 6pm for a performance.)

Edinburgh

A celebration of the vinyl format is promised at Underground Solu'shn, with a DJ set from settled Edinburgh native Prosumer, and a bunch of mini label showcases. Representing Triassic Tusk are live sets from Malcolm Middleton, Lomond Campbell and Jo Foster; from Paradise Palms Records Mr TC (also of Optimo Music) and Sweet Dieter; and Kate Kid Canaveral (Lost Map), Faith Eliott (Song, By Toad), Inkke (LuckyMe) and Bards of Caledon (Firecracker Recordings), as well as a DJ appearance from BBC Radio Scotland / 6 Music's Vic Galloway.

Down in Stockbridge, meanwhile, VoxBox Music is taking over the whole street with a day-long mini-festival encompassing the Antiquary, the Last Word and the shop itself. Expect a book talk and signing with The Incredible String Band's Mike Heron and appearances from Honeyblood's Stina Tweeddale, Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison, Trembling Bells' Mike Hastings, Meursault, Martha Ffion, Miracle Glass Company and many more.

Meursault will also be putting in an appearance at Coda Music alongside Mt Doubt, Eastern Swell and Dean Owens & Amy Geddes, with bacon rolls from 8pm very much part of the attraction, while the Triassic Tusk line-up of Middleton, Campbell and Foster will also be showing up at Assai Records.

London

The official Record Store Day site lists 26 participating shops in London, far more than we can go into in-depth here. So instead, we'll try and pick a few of the best – like, to no-one's surprise, both Rough Trade East and Rough Trade West. The former hosts an incredible line-up, including DJ sets from Django Django, Joe Goddard, David Rodigan and Keb Darge, with live appearances from Ibibio Sound Machine, Flowdan, Boxed In and Brian Jonestown Massacre; at the latter, Nadine Khouri, Craig Finn, Penguin Café and others will all be playing live.

Flashback Records has live sets from The Duke Spirit, Bare Pale, Spoilers and more, and an afterparty at Brooklyn Brewery; Vinyl Pimp is hosting Luke Vibert, Ray Keith, Bambooman and others; The Book and Record Bar has guest DJ sets from DJ Food and Dr Alex Patterson of The Orb; and Love Vinyl has a live set from Dele Sosimi and DJ appearances from Luke Solomon, Bob Jones and Mark Rae of Rae & Christian.

Manchester

Manchester institution Piccadilly Records is throwing a party inside and outside the store, with live and DJ sets from GoGo Penguin, Pasta Paul and BBC 6 Music's Marc Riley, among others, in the shop, and for those queuing there'll be Workshop Coffee and Blawd doughnuts. Also, nearby at Common, a Record Store Day party will continue all day and into the evening, with live sets from Wedding, Menage a Trois and Former Bullies, and a special limited edition RSD beer from the Cloudwater brewery.

Eastern Bloc also has an extensive line-up of in-house DJs and special guests appearing, including Hidden Spheres, Konny Kon, Samuel Kerridge and a bunch of NTS representatives playing a wide selection of club styles, while Vinyl Exchange, Vinyl Revival and Endless Music are all joining in, the latter with a live in-store set from north west songwriter and recent Grandaddy support Jay Stansfield.

Bristol

Rise will have a full day of live bands downstairs, including Palace, Hannah Lou Clarke, The Evil Usses, Fenne Lily and Jonny Velon, and DJs upstairs including Deli G, Soulwerks Crew and James Small of Eat the Beat Allstars, while Friska will be opening at 6am to serve the queue coffee and breakfasts. Friendly Records will have a bunch of to-be-announced DJs and t-shirts, bags and stickers designed by Pete Fowler, while nearby Longwell Records in Keynsham will have live sets from Natalie Holmes, Pixi Encore, Steve Mercy and more.
