Spend this May half-term with a rapping Einstein, a time warp back to the Victorian era and a magical Moomin orchestra

With plenty of kid-friendly events taking place at the Underbelly Festival and the Royal Albert Hall's inaugural Festival of Science, London is the place to be this May half-term. From theatre that's literally out of this world to a disco dance for the tiniest of tykes, there's enough going on in the capital to keep the whole family entertained throughout the week.

A Strange New Space
Winner of the Edinburgh Fringe Primary Times Children's Choice Award in 2017, Tessa Bide's A Strange New Space is a non-verbal show that follows the true story of Amira, who dreams of becoming an astronaut and exploring the stars. But can her imagination carry her through a difficult new reality when she becomes a refugee and must undergo a very different journey across continents? A stunning display of physical theatre, puppetry and music for children ages 4 years and older.
Royal Albert Hall, Tue 29 May

Albert Einstein: Relatively Speaking
Tangram Theatre presents a quantum leap through the life and work of one of the 20th century's greatest minds. A riotous mix of comedy, theatre and music, Einstein himself – as frizzy-haired and moustachioed as ever – takes the stage to detail his harrowing escape from two world wars and raps his way through the greatest hits of theoretical physics. He is joined on piano by his wives and mum, as well as guest rapper MC Squared.

London History Day: Victorian Classroom
The half-term may have just begun, but it's time to head back to school – with a timey-wimey twist. The Ragged School Museum has faithfully recreated a classroom straight from the Victorian era, complete with slate writing boards, the dreaded dunce cap and gender-based double-standards. This immersive experience will give children insight into the lives of their Victorian counterparts, and potentially with the added bonus of making present-day school seem pretty great in comparison
Guildhall Art Gallery, Thu 31 May

A World Inside a Book: Gruffalos, Dragon and Other Creatures
Immerse yourself in the technicolour world of beloved children's author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler in this 3D exhibition featuring some of their most iconic tales. The showcase begins with a storyteller in a recreation of Charlie Cook's cosy sitting room, before opening up into an enchanted forest full of accident-prone dragons and fearsome Gruffalos, clever giants and the Highway Rat. Just be sure to grab a witches' hat before you're whisked away by the eponymous household instrument from Room on the Broom.

Michael Rosen's Chocolate Cake
As if we needed another reason to extol the virtues of good slice of cake, Peter Glanville and Barb Jungr are serving up a scrumptious musical adaptation of Michael Rosen's epic poem 'Chocolate Cake'. Four-year-old Wilfred loves cake, but when his mum bakes a delicious chocolate cake for his brother Joe, the temptation may be too much to resist… especially when it goes missing in the middle of the night.

Moomins and the Comet: Live Re-Score
Ahead of the 2019 release of Moominvalley (which will feature serious star quality from the likes of Kate Winslet, Rosamund Pike and Richard Ayoade), the 1980s TV adaptation of Tove Jansson's visionary Comet in Moominland is being treated to a full re-scoring by Graeme Miller. The hijinks of the strangely-charming Moomin family will be accompanied by an equally weird blend of Casios, ocarinas and a box of cornflakes. Perfect for Moomin fans old and new.
Royal Albert Hall, Sun 3 June

Monski Mouse's Baby Disco Dance Hall
Nobody puts baby in a corner in this dance hall. Monski Mouse has performed to sold-out crowds in Australia and cities across the UK, and now she's bringing her family-friendly disco to the Underbelly Festival. A disco for youngsters ages five and under and their adults, the event is a fun and friendly way for families to relax, dance and bond. Disco-style fancy dress is strongly encouraged.

In the Night Garden Live
The beloved CBeebies programme is brought to life through puppetry, costumes and enchanting projections in the purpose-built Showdome. With only 13 rows of seats, families will get an intimate experience of this calm and gentle show, which follows Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy and Makka Pakka as they overcome low-stakes obstacles, like losing a blanket or getting a sponge stuck up Upsy Daisy's megaphone.
